About me
Andrei Precup was born in Cluj-Napoca in the heart of Transylvania, northern Romania in 1992. Having grown up in the post-communist era, soon after the revolution, art wasn’t a part of his entourage until he met a family friend who was a painter. His interest in art was cultivated during his teenage years and further developed when he opted to study Fine Arts for his high school degree.
Choosing to expand his horizons, Andrei decided to take up a new challenge by moving to England for is BA degree in 2011. Once started, his degree course became a challenging task for him due to the big discrepancy between the two teaching methods. Romanian teaching has at its base a lot of traditional anatomy studies, whereas the English style of teaching he was exposed to was very experimental and focused on self exploration.
Having experienced both worlds, Andrei found that the more experimental process suited him best in regards to his artistic work. His practice has at its core an interest in new techniques and the unconventional use of materials, exploring different possible paths that his work can take before it reaches its final form. Often his works experiment with the subversion of monochrome using bright colours, or play with scale. Although the works are inviting and welcoming, they do not shy away from subtle political comments or ironic humour. Andrei’s work can best be described as curiosity combined with the experiences and situations that cross his path.
Since graduating in 2015, Andrei has been working as a studio assistant for Paul Cox alongside developing his own artworks.
Andrei has had several exhibitions within the south coast of England including Worthing Museum, a solo show in St Paul’s Worthing and UTC College Newhaven where he is currently resident.
